Economics of the Heart: Lummi Island No Kings Day Parade
US ICE agent snatches Haitian immigrant seeking asylum (courtesy bbc.com)
The first six months of Project 2025 were tightly focused on fomenting as much wide-spread chaos as possible across the operational structure of the US government. Its dual purpose seemed to be: 1) completely dismantle our 250-year old Constitutional mission of creating and maintaining order, liberty, and the rule of law for all “the people of the United States;” and 2) replace Constitutional civil rights and order for all with a mean-spirited, racist, sexist, egocentric White Christian autocracy which rules without mercy.
To that end our present Republi-Fascist government began with the mass firing without replacement of tens of thousands of seasoned federal workers. Experts at their jobs with many years of professional service were fired without reason or replacement, rendering large portions of the government unable to function. This was no gradual or methodical shifting of the wheels of government, but a deliberate shutting down and dis-empowering of entire agencies overnight that went on for months.
That groundwork of chaos having been laid, the four months since June were increasingly aimed at solidifying a public impression that the Coup is now complete and irrevocable. Like the Borg of Star Trek fiction, Project 2025, like Fascist regimes anywhere, they give us all two choices: 1) shut up and stay out of our way, or 2) we will keep hurting you until you do. We have ICE terrorizing entire communities of immigrants, “disappearing” without warrant or accountability thousands of “illegal immigrants,” bombing and murdering people in small boats in international waters, and sending hundreds to prison hellholes in other countries, or the Everglades, or perhaps thrown out of airplanes to their deaths. They call them “illegal immigrants” but no evidence to substantiate. There is no justice in this picture, but a lot of criminal cruelty toward ordinary people who need homes and jobs.
Now in October few Constitutional guardrails remain in place. Congress is no longer relevant, and future “elections” might well be decided long before anyone “votes.” As intended, Project 2025’s year so far has been sobering and gut-wrenching. The bad news is that they have been very effective at concentrating power in the Executive Branch. The “good news” is that each day over the last several weeks public opinion has been increasingly mobilizing opposition. As more and more Americans of both parties are waking up to the grim prospect of losing democracy completely, resistance is coalescing into various “solidarities of resistance” (just coined that!) across the nation.
This Saturday’s symbolic, hope-generating, and unifying nationwide celebration of “No Kings Day“ across the nation is expected to bring millions to the streets of their communities to march in solidarity to defend our Constitutional Rights. From small towns (and islands!) to major cities, in Red states and Blue, this first “solidarity of resistance” is another spark in a growing flame of humanistic intention to preserve this nation of the people, by the people, and for the people.
