lummi island wine tasting december 27 ’14

Closed Friday!

That’s right, it’s the day after Christmas, “Boxing Day” over the border, when hordes of shoppers are out looking for Bargains. Well, we have learned from experience that Lummi Island is not like that, PLUS there will be no fresh bread this week, so we are giving ourselves the day off.

But please come by on Saturday for the usual hours 2-6, taste some good wine, and relax away any lingering Holiday Tension!

Tenth Annual “East Coast” New Year’s Eve Gala Extravaganza!

Yes friends, it’s here again! From 7-9pm on New Year’s Eve we provide the wine, you bring something delicious to share, and when the Ball drops in Times Square we hoist our glasses and toast the Year of the Goat! (huh?…GOAT..?? There’s a whole YEAR of the Goat? What’s that about???).

Afterwards, as usual, you young folks can move on to your next party, and we old timers can get to bed at a decent hour! We have grown quite fond of this annual chance to thank all of you who have visited, schmoozed, chatted, laughed, and enjoyed yourselves with us this past year, and to look ahead together to more fun in aught-fifteen. Wine Club members free; Non-members welcome, donations appreciated.

Here’s the deal: We provide the space and the wine, and you bring your most delectable finger food to share. BEST DISH* WINS A NICE BOTTLE OF WINE! Mark your calendars and start planning your finger food.

*(Best Dish to be decided by an Independent Secret Judge who promises to taste every entry and make a completely subjective decision!)

Dancing with Davy Jones

dscn1054Having followed the ongoing saga of the Green Ketch (“Ning Ning”) in recent posts, a little over a week ago we were surprised and saddened to see her sunk again, this time completely submerged. Arrrrr, we thought, there it is, lads, Davy Jones has finally gotten the upper hand, and a soberin’ thing it is…”

dscn1068 (Modified) So a couple of days ago we were delighted and amazed to see that like the proverbial phoenix, Ning Ning seems to have had other plans, because there she sat, fully afloat once again, another little Victory in our collective Ongoing Struggle against Entropy.

Holiday Sutra

There’s been a lot of troubling news lately from nearly every direction, to the point that I find myself wondering many times a day, “Wtf is Wrong with people?” In part this little mantra provides a moment of comic relief that in some curious way makes it maybe a little more bearable. But really, at some deep level, it is easy to become discouraged at the increasing scarcity of basic Kindness and Compassion. Here’s a lovely passage from the Metta Sutta  that is a quieting reminder of whom we can aspire to become.

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings,
Radiating kindness over the entire world

This week’s wines

Scherrer Chardonnay ’11 California $30
Pale yellow. High-pitched aromas of tangerine, pear, ginger and anise, with a suave floral quality; smooth and fleshy on entry, offering juicy orchard fruit and melon flavors with a bracing touch of lemon zest.

Ultimo Passo Primitivo ’13 Italy $13
Rich, ripe, almost untuous, with 15% raisined grapes, double-fermented on indigenous yeast to produce a perfect balance of acidity, aromatics, and pleasing palate.

Podere Ciona Montegrossoli ’12 Italy $14
Merlot from a hilltop vineyard in Chianti Classico, showing bright red fruit, subtle smoky notes, and a full-bodied, lush, feminine style.

Writers Block Cab Franc ’12 California $14
Complex aromas of fresh dark berries, black cherry, plum, and a subtle brambly profile. Tobacco, chocolate, and herbal flavors blend with a floral component and notes of toasted oak.

Betz Besoleil ’12 Washington $45
Grenache- based Rhone blend; Serious, densely packed wine with musky, brooding nose of deep black smoky and gamy fruit and pomegranate, with intense dark fruit flavors and bright acidity.
